Te Omanga Bird Aviary Relocation – An Environment & Amenities Committee Project
The relocation of the bird aviary at Te Omanga Hospice was one of the major projects for the Environment and Amenities Committee in 2021 – 2022.  Whilst the hospice originally envisaged a new aviary being built, the cost and the logistics of this concept seemed rather daunting.

However, Richard Perry indicated that he had a very good friend, Colin White, in the building trade that might be willing to help us out.  Thankfully Colin was willing to assist and provide the expert guidance we needed.  Colin already had an association with the hospice and was aware of the aviary project.  He suggested we can ‘move the old one’ - and that’s exactly what we did.  Club members volunteered for the initial task of laying a new concrete floor in April '22.

The major exercise of lifting the aviary with a Hiab truck and moving it to its new location was completed on the 14th of May.  Colin and I then set about fixing the aviary structure to the new foundation and completing any minor repair work.  Early in July a group of us painted the aviary interior so the birds could return to their refurbished accommodation.

Then in Spring, once we had some warmer and settled weather, we repaired and painted the exterior.  This was all completed by the end of October 2022.  The roof is yet to be replaced, but this is being organised by the hospice with Silbery Roofing
