Last Meeting: "Our Valley" - David Gledhill
David shared his outstanding history knowledge of NZ around 1800, the Musket wars, the invasion by Ngati Toa and Te Atiawa and how the Hutt Valley became of age. Frankly, listeners had to think how brutal it was in those early days but then there was the friendship of the local Maori, iwi, Te Puni and Wi Tako.
He talked about The New Zealand Company, Edward Gibbon Wakefield and how the Hutt Valley was purchased, the Plan for settlement of Britannia, the reality, and Hutt City Council's "pathetic memorial".
Some of the historic sites David highlighted were: Military Road, Heretaunga Blockhouse, Percy Reserves' water/mill and of course, Taita's Christ Church, for which our valued member John Terris has been activity involved in establishing a visitors centre.
The thrust of David's talk was that we, as society and government should do more to preserve our heritage and if you'd like to know more, his script can be read HERE.

General Notices:
* Bowling Club Evening - 30th November: We are planning to have "A Night out Bowling" at the Hutt Bowling Club in Myrtle Street. Judy Dearsley is assisting us with the arrangements and as usual, Chalet will do the catering. We are planning "finger food" rather than a sit-down meal so people can play (cleaned fingers), or watch the bowls as they wish.
* Hutt Repertory Play: "Waiting for God" - Thursday 3rd December: We hoping to sell 40 tickets – members, friends and neighbours. Tickets are $20 and it will be an excellent show and will, for us, include canapes and raffles. We must have an early commitment to book those seats and it's very popular. Assemble at 7:30pm for a laugh-a-minute start from 8pm!
* Christmas Party date: This is Monday 7th December - keep this day clear!
* Rotary Leader: To read this recent addition, click HERE
Please study and plan ahead, especially if you are on duty to write a Bulletin Contribution. A reminder that it's also your responsibility to find a replacement if you are unable to fulfill your duty.
