Last Meeting: Innovative Young Minds - Students from Naenae College
Earlier this year, our Club sponsored two Naenae College students, Alaa Loulou and Ilma Aminudeen, and another club sponsored Cindy Zhu, to attend Innovative Young Minds. This year there were 40 students from the Wellington region and 40 from other parts of New Zealand. There were visits to a number of organisations including Resene, Fraser Engineering, Opus, NIWA, Capital E, Massey University, and the Water Treatment Plant, as well as visits from motivational speakers.

Tonight we had the pleasure to hear about their experience from Cindy and Alaa, and a read-out report from Ilma who was unable to attend our meeting.

Cindy spoke of being the youngest of four siblings, and the only one to study in the STEMM area. She was current taking Physics and Calculus. She spoke highly of the visits to the Water Treatment Plant, and Capital E where students used 3-D programming and imagining to create their own virtual land. Hearing personal stories of people working in STEMM areas, she found particularly inspiring. She said that her self-confidence had really grown, as she was pushed outside her comfort zone. It was an experience she will never forget.

Ala, who is originally from Syria, spoke of being the only female sibling in her family, and the experience of IYM had opened her eyes to the opportunities in STEMM areas for females. She said that without the sponsorship, she wouldn’t have been able to attend. She spoke of the friendships made, which would continue. A highlight for her was visiting NIWA and their research with marine life.

All students thanked the Rotary Clubs for the opportunity to attend, and for the sponsorship.

Parting Thought: from Paddy Wells

" When you hear or see "Mind the Gap" it is not only to warn you about the platform gap,

but also that you might be hit by my walking stick that's jammed in the door!"
