Last Meeting: Dr. James Kember - "Steady Wins the Race".
After training in the NZ Forest Service James has had a very full career as a diplomat, including being NZ ambassador in Ethiopia, (with the NZ Flag proudly flying on the ambassadorial Land Rover), Portugal, the EU and France, High Commissioner in the Pacific where he got to know Bill Boyd, and representing NZ when NZ was a member of the Security Council.  He explained how in the esoteric world of international diplomacy progress  is best described as glacial, taking up to 20 years to conclude a treaty. The  WW1 Centenary commemorations in France were the main part of his address.

Three aspects of Paris made a special impression: the food, the terrorist incidents, and the daily commemoration of France's military history. He put the NZ war effort in proportion when he explained how NZ lost 11,000 casualties on the French front in the first world war, including 100 in an action just five days before the armistice ended the fighting. He showed pictures of tributes in France to the NZ contribution, including being the "Country of Honour" leading the national parade down the Champs Elysee on Bastille Day 2016.

Healthy Homes - update
