Dave Comparini - RIP:

We are very sad to advise that Dave Comparini passed away peacefully on Thursday 7th May and a Tribute from his son, Tony is HERE.

To accommodate the family's wishes, a decision will be made next week on what is planned to say farewell Dave and acknowledge his remarkable life.

Meanwhile, we can share a few of our memories together via a Zoom Session today at 5pm.  We look forward to you joining us.  If you haven't received an Invitation, contact Secretary David Thompson.

Will this be the Government's decision today?

Rotary International Membership
I saw a comment the other day that a Rotarian was querying what was happening at Rotary International level. RI staff are working from home till at least 30th April and there will be no funded RI travel before May 31st. The April meetings of the RI Board and the Foundation Trustees were both held virtually. Not simple because of time zones! All Peace Fellows were asked to return home if possible and somewhere in excess of 1000 Rotary Youth Exchangees returned home early.

Polio Update
As at 8 April, Afghanistan had 3 cases this year as again 29 for the full year last year. In the month of February there were 6.7 million children vaccinated but 1.9 million children were missed as they were in areas that were inaccessible. They have 19 cross border posts which vaccinated 1.8 million children as the amount of movement between Afghanistan and Pakistan is considerable. In their country they have 2926 social mobilisers, who organise and vaccinate.

General Notices:

* Member's Messages:
From Jan: “I am keeping well, just having the occasional “rough” day. I have been assessed by the hospital for my reversal operation and have been told it will happen shortly. Here’s hoping! Stay safe, stay well.”
From Moira: "In Africa we have a lovely ritual on initial greeting.  It goes something like this: "Saw'bona - I see you" (meaning I see you're not a ghost!); reply: "E'we, sa'bona, kunjani wena - Yes, I see you; how are you?"  Response:  "Ndiapele - I am alive"….it's a good thing to be alive in Africa!!  So…when I painfully crank myself out of bed every day in search of the first batch of prescription painkillers and regretting all the impulsive/reckless actions of my youth in apology to my back; I remind myself that I am alive and that's a good start!  Meanwhile, after initiating the laborious return to work process 3 weeks ago (extra so in this time of lockdown), the formerly supportive part of my lower back threw in the towel and declared a strike.  So, now I await the next stage of the pre-planned medical intervention, another cortisone infusion into the nerves exiting the right side of the lowest part of the lumbar vertebra (L5) and hope that will be as successful as the left and I can get back to work.  My learning through this? I now have to accept I'll have to pay someone else to do (imperfectly!) what I've always done for myself... exactly the way I wanted it done and that growing old(er) with grace is a daily challenge.  Humility comes at a price!  How did all this come to pass so quickly??"

* Cyclone Harold:  Dave Wilson has recommended that any donations to help replenish ERK’s by our Club Members should be through our Club Treasurer.

* Children's Hospital Raffle: Our District is running this fundraising raffle for the Family/Whanau Rooms.  This will now be drawn on 30th June and Jan Palmer has tickets available until it closes.  Anyone who is able to take a book or two to sell to family/friends/work colleagues, would be appreciated.  It's a great cause!
